KemetKids.com Parents' Guide
Questions and Answers
Kemet Kids was originally conceived as an entertaining kid-safe web comic. It's a comic that you can feel good about letting your child read. Here at KemetKids.com, we've tried to put together some questions that parents might have about the comic and its approach. Please note that these questions address parental concerns only; for an overall view of the storyline, please see our "about" page. Although this page was written as a cohesive document, you can navigate to a particular question by clicking on the links below.

What's a web comic?
A web comic is simply a comic that's available on the web. Not all of them are free, and not all of them are appropriate for children. Kemet Kids is both kid-safe and free to read online.
If Kemet Kids were a movie, how would you rate it? (Is it kid-safe?)
We'd give it a PG rating, and we'd recommend it to readers age nine and up. PG, in case you've forgotten, stands for Parental Guidance Suggested. (Apollo 13 and Dead Poets Society were PG-rated, too, and they dealt with some hefty issues.) There may be a few PG-13 rated scenes.
Parents, please keep an eye on what your kids are doing on the Internet.
I have religious concerns.
While the ancient Egyptian gods play a major part in the storyline, Kemet Kids is faith-neutral, and the protagonists come from a variety of religious and cultural backgrounds. Kemet Kids makes no attempt to convert readers to or from any religion. The kids do have magical powers, though, so if you frown on Harry Potter, Kemet Kids might not be for you.
Is Kemet Kids appropriate for my child?
Quite frankly, that's your call, not ours. We don't know your kid.
This is going to come down to the difference between Kemet Kids philosophy and the philosophies of some other comic creators and publishers. In Archie Comics, the characters can't be shown drinking, smoking, or neglecting to wear a seat belt. We aren't knocking in Archie's wholesome approach; we think it's pretty cool. But it's not the approach of Kemet Kids.
We're striving towards ethical realism. The protagonists in Kemet Kids are fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds, and, just like real people, they will face some ethical dilemmas. They're going to screw up, make bad choices, and get in fights--and, in keeping with our realistic outlook, these mistakes are going to have consequences, just like in the real world. This is both an ethical choice and a narrative one.
How is Kemet Kids different from other comics in the American superhero or Japanese "magical girl" genres?
Parental involvement--that's it in a nutshell. In most American superhero stories, the superhero (even if the superhero is a teen) hides their newfound powers. In both genres the heroes tend to lead double lives. This can be unrealistic, especially in the case of young protagonists. The kids in Kemet Kids are advised by their teacher to tell their parents about what's going on, so their parents can help.
Despite this, the kids don't always tell their parents everything; we are trying to be realistic, after all.
What are your privacy practices?
We aren't currently doing any sorts of mass mailings, but if we do you can be sure that we won't sell or give away your e-mail address to third parties.
What about advertisements?
We don't currently have any advertisements; however, we do plan to post some in the future. We'll do our best to ensure that we're not linking to any content that isn't safe for kids, and we will clearly mark links that lead away from KemetKids.com.
Well, we think we've covered everything. . . if not, please send an e-mail to S. Phillips.
