Technichally it's a Jack.
A Jack is a type of Naval flag smaller than the main flag. Mary-Helen's Jack, the Kriegsgösch, comes from a very large battleship and is used in wartime. Likewise, the Iron Cross pictured on it is also a war medal instituted by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1813. The German armed forces currently use a version of the Iron Cross as their emblem. In America we have a similar medal to commemorate bravery above and beyond the call of duty: the Purple Heart.
