She is both a goddess and concept in ancient Egyptian religion, the most important force in the universe since order was equated with goodness and righteousness. All ancient Egyptians strove to sustain Ma'at in their lives: order, balance, and correct living. After death, a person would be judged on how well they upheld Ma'at (lived righteously). Apep is the motal enemy of Ma'at, since his chaos wishes to destroy and corrupt her.

Anubis is the Greek name for the god known as Anpu or Yinepu. Anubis is the god of the underworld, and the judge of the dead. When dead souls come to him in the underworld, he balances their hearts against a feather to see if they have lived righteously. Unrighteous deeds will make their soul's heart heavier than the feather, while a pure heart will balance out. If a soul's heart is heavy, the soul is fed to Anubis' pet, Ammut.
